Visit the Exhibitions Bureau in Warsaw and discover a captivating exhibition by Marta Kwiatek, head of the Screen Printing and Drawing Studio at the School of Form. Titled “Mineralne gatunki jako pierwotni i ostateczni mieszkańcy ziemi” (“Mineral Species as the First and Last Inhabitants of the Earth”), this collection features a series of serigraphs inspired by the majestic forms of stones. Kwiatek’s artwork encourages viewers to look at the matter that has existed on this planet long before us from a new perspective.

Knocking on the door of stones with respect

Living within the ecological ruins of the Anthropocene often prompts us to think about the end of life on Earth. From a human point of view, this can feel utterly definitive—final. However, for the planet itself, it is merely the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another. In the long history of the universe, the period in which life (bios and zoe) accompanies it is remarkably brief. Marta Kwiatek’s exhibition widens this perspective by placing mineral species—present on Earth since the very beginning—at the center of the conversation.

I knock on the door of stones with both respect and affection, treating them as my partners. I never place myself above them—quite the opposite. The majestic forms I encounter often take care of me. I rest on their soft bodies, blend into them, and we share a moment together. The stone has become important to me, a part of me. I devote a lot of time and attention to it. My human family waits patiently while I document my encounters with the stones. They respect this connection.

The artist processes the material she collects using graphic techniques. Then she cuts it, glues, and composes. These structures are then exposed to ultraviolet light and printed manually. The resulting serigraphs function as keepsakes—souvenirs of encounters with species that existed long before human environments shaped the Earth.
