Maciej Siuda and Aleksandra Kędziorek from SWPS University’s School of Form have been awarded the Bronze Gloria Artis Medals for Merit to Culture for their work on the exhibition “Lares and Penates.” This prestigious honor is one of the highest distinctions granted to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Polish culture.

School of Form lecturers recognized for cultural contributions
The Gloria Artis Medals for Merit to Culture (Latin gloria artis – “glory to art”) are awarded by Poland’s Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. They recognize individuals and institutions for outstanding achievements in the arts, cultural activities, or the preservation of national heritage.
Maciej Siuda and Aleksandra Kędziorek received the Bronze Medals for co-creating the exhibition “Lares and Penates. On Building a Sense of Security in Architecture,” which is currently on view at the Polish Pavilion at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice—one of the world’s most prestigious architecture events.
The exhibition is curated by an interdisciplinary team:
- Maciej Siuda – architect
- Aleksandra Kędziorek – art historian
- Krzysztof Maniak – visual artist
- Katarzyna Przezwańska –sculptor and painter
All four contributors received their medals from Minister of Culture and National Heritage Hanna Wróblewska during the official opening of the exhibition at the Polish Pavilion in Venice.

“Lares and Penates”: how architecture helps us cope with fear
The exhibition explores the universal human need to feel safe in the spaces we inhabit. Its title refers to the Lares and Penates—ancient Roman household gods who protected the home and family. Over time, the expression “lares and penates” came to symbolize domestic objects.
The exhibition raises important questions:
- What kinds of objects make us feel protected?
- How can architecture soothe fears related to forces of nature, war, or illness?
- What makes us feel safe at home?
The curators point out that architecture addresses our need for safety in various ways. It goes beyond adhering to building codes and standards—it is also about rituals and cultural practices passed down through generations to bring good fortune, ward off evil, or protect from harm.
