The global environmental crisis is forcing designers to think about alternative production methods. As part of his thesis, Sergey Moskalev sought solutions for processing plastic using methods accessible to the average person. Following the idea of DIY, a closed-loop economy, he created a prototype of a sustainable bicycle pedal. The designer used Precious Plastic tools to process plastic in a homemade way.

In the face of a global environmental crisis and a long-awaited change in the economic model, the distribution and diversification of production and design processes has become very important. The creator of the project shows that instead of relying on corporations to produce goods for us, a good alternative is to take responsibility for their production into our own hands. By using the DIY method and building a circular economy from the bottom up, we can engage in recycling and reduce waste. Furthermore, if the end consumer is not separated from the product by endless chains of suppliers, sellers and countless managers, but instead can directly influence the final product through contact with its designer and manufacturer, such a product can be more universal and the market response more dynamic.

The designer set out to design and manufacture a recycled plastic bicycle pedal. Building his own open source machine using Precious Plastic's alternative plastic recycling system, he went through several design stages to create a sustainable and environmentally friendly product that is relatively easy to replicate at home.

By implementing some cutting-edge ideas from a design and engineering background, together with the author's cycling experience, he has created a robust prototype that will encourage other designers and manufacturers to develop their own open source solutions and help build a new harmonious economy together.
