Graduation project

My way to activism

The project consists of two series of posters – "Rape Culture" and "Gender Monster". They show the absurdity and inadequacy of the concepts depicted. They are intended to reach as many users of public spaces as possible.

The project is inspired by Maja Staśko's book "Rape Is a Compliment After All. What is Rape Culture?". The author of the posters deliberately refrained from embellishing them because she does not agree with beautifying the grim reality. She places her work in public spaces to reach the widest possible audience.

"Rape culture" – this term sounds like a cruel joke, because how can you talk about culture in the context of a violent act? Unfortunately, for some parts of society, it is just a joke, seen as another invention of hysterical feminists, treated as a trivial problem that does not need more attention. However, these are not trivial situations. Sexual violence, attempted rape, harassment –unfortunately, many women have experienced it. The author of the project, as an activist, feels a strong need to expose this problem, to name it and to make society aware of its existence and extent.

The artist's goal is to change how people think. She wants those who scoff and trivialize the problem to understand that by their actions they are condoning great harm and injustice to another human being. The harm done to victims is often hidden behind a veil of shame for fear of judgment. It is rape culture that feeds unpunished abusers who shamelessly laugh in the faces of their past, present, and future victims.

The project is an important social message, so that we do not remain silent when someone suffers in silence, and we do not allow ourselves to be silenced when we are told that it's "no big deal". We should not allow anyone to tell us that it has always been like this and that a woman is just being flirtatious when she says "no".
