Fashion to survive

There is a lot of talk about the inevitable climate catastrophe. What will we be wearing in the post-apocalyptic reality of the year 2237? Will fashion – understood as a union of industry and the media – become obsolete?

Postapocalictic Fashion

The students prepared designs specifically for the heroes and heroines facing the challenges of living on Earth at a time of dramatic changes to human environment and the progressing and ever more violent climate catastrophe. As material, they used defective, deficient or damaged elements of mass-produced collections delivered by LPP SA .

The individualised ideas about the future were connected by a common denominator of limitations: limited access to energy, material resources and tools. This paved the way to formal experiments and search for unusual construction methods. Hybrid forms were created using raw materials obtained through circular waste management. The upcycling strategy – meaning recovering instead of throwing resources away – produced results on several levels. The fruit of this venture is a series of intriguing figures, but also a critical reflection on current practices in the clothing industry, ecological costs of production and social responsibility in design.
