Bread Baking Utensils

Bread has many symbolic meanings, both historically and from a modern perspective. We saw the importance of bread and the process of baking it at the beginning of the COVID 19 pandemic - when, among other things, yeast ran out on store shelves. One of the cultural effects of the slowing down of life during the pandemic was a turn to activities for which we normally have no time. One of these was home bread baking, which had a therapeutic function. It is a primal activity that gave us a sense of stability in the difficult and uncertain times of the pandemic. It was a kind of training in mindfulness and social action involving sharing and eating together.

Observing the process of making bread dough by hand and hearing stories from people around the author about the ways and rituals of eating bread inspired this project. As a result, the author created bread-making utensils in which bread takes on a variety of forms.

The project was realized by Magdalena Szatyńska – a student at the School of Form, SWPS University.

The work was shown as part of the "New Generation" exhibition during the Gdynia Design Days 2023 festival, curated by School of Form lecturer Agata Kiedrowicz.
